The need for your brand to stand out is in high demand because of the barrage of advertising being pushed on consumers. Let’s dive in!
1. Give Back
Want to raise local awareness? One of the best ways is to join a local non-profit board, volunteer your time and expertise, and help them succeed. It not only makes you feel good, you are doing good. Contributing to your community is one of the best ways for your brand to stand out. If you are in Chicago, are a Cubs fan, and want to support a fantastic cause, make sure to buy your tickets for the Rooftop Party on May 1, 2017.
2. Communicate Personally
When companies get started, they often start out being personable, which attracts customers. But as the company grows, the brand can sometimes turn more formal, losing the personal aspects they once offered. In order to stand out, get personal! Transform your brand into an approachable and personable voice for customers to connect with.
3. Celebrate with Customers
We all love to celebrate victories, no matter how small. When you design personal, memorable brand experiences for your customers, your brand has the opportunity to learn the tiniest details and nuances about each individual customer. One of the best ways to use that data is to celebrate with your customers. Whether it’s their birthday or they’ve completed a major milestone working with you, sending a gift, a handwritten note, or chocolate is a great indirect way to stand out among your competitors.

Freshbooks, one of my highly recommended tools, sends their customers cakes on their birthday!
4. Offer a Membership Experience
Have you noticed why some brands are able to attract, grow, and retain a highly engaged and interactive audience? What are they doing differently to stand out? Most likely, they offer a membership experience component.
This could take many forms like a loyalty rewards program (Starbucks has one of the best), a free online community (Facebook), or an immersive education-based membership (Digital Commerce Institute). Read more about offering membership experiences and the four factors that make them memorable.
5. Tell Stories
We all love stories. Especially ones full of drama, intrigue, twists and turns. But when it comes to business, many brands tend to forget that humans (us), learn best through stories. Stories are a way to relate universally to a large audience, to make a topic more personable, and to show our more vulnerable side. It can be tough! But the rewards are plenty.
When you choose to open up, your audience will as well. And that is where you will learn your best insights about who they are, what they are seeking, where they need help and the challenges they are facing. Once you know that, combined with an amazing membership experience and BOOM! you are off to the races!

6. Engage with Online Experiences
As our lives move more online than not, competition is ever-increasing. On top of that, people are beginning to notice what experiences they like online, and which they don’t. What is an online experience? It could be:
- A live webinar (Masterclass, free training, etc.)
- Pre-recorded webinar (most pre-recorded webinars are terrible, but there are a few that are enjoyable)
- Blog posts (if you are a great writer, you can create an exceptional reading experience online)
- Facebook Live
- Instagram Stories
Think about where you prefer to spend your time online. What about those experiences do you enjoy most? How can you replicate those experiences and infuse them into your brand experiences?
7. Create a Podcast to Showcase your Expertise
Creating a podcast (or any of the above) is a great way to showcase your expertise, gain exposure for your brand, and build an audience. When you go live on Facebook, host a podcast, or deliver a webinar, you are sharing your knowledge, stories, and expertise to create a memorable experience. It’s a great way to stand out from the crowd and position your brand for major growth. Here are some of my favorite podcasts that offer an amazing listening experience.
